Maharashtra: Car Used in Murder of Sufi Religious Leader Recovered, Accused Still Absconding

Mumbai, 8th July 2022: Police in Maharashtra’s Nashik district on Thursday recovered the car used in the murder of Sufi cleric and Afghan national Khwaja Syed Zarif Chishti alias Zarif Baba. An official gave this information. Chishti, 38, had been living as a refugee in India for the past four years and has a large following on social media. Chishti was shot dead on Tuesday evening near Yeola in Nashik district, about 300 km from Mumbai.

 

 

 

The officer said that he was killed over a property dispute, but the Nashik countryside police are probing from several other angles as well. On Thursday, a police team recovered the car used in the crime from Ahmednagar district. He said that the accused fled leaving the vehicle at Sangamner and the pistol used in the crime was yet to be recovered.

 

 

 

So far no arrest has been made in the case

 

Police had taken one person into custody in the case, but no arrest has been made so far. According to preliminary investigation, the driver of the car in which Chishti had last traveled shot him. The official said that Chishti lived with his second wife in Nashik district and investigators are trying to talk to her but facing language problems as she speaks only Persian.
