Mumbai Aims for Cleanliness Resurgence Following Swachh Survekshan 2023 Results

Mumbai, 12th January 2024: Despite a decline in the Swachh Survekshan 2023 rankings, Mumbai is set to initiate a ‘deep cleaning drive’ to enhance cleanliness in the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) expressed determination to improve Mumbai’s standing in the next survey, acknowledging the challenges revealed by the recent results.

The Swachh Survekshan 2023 results, disclosed on Thursday, indicated Mumbai’s drop from the 31st to the 37th spot among million-plus cities. Navi Mumbai, Mumbai’s neighbouring city, maintained a strong position, securing the third spot for the second consecutive year. Indore and Surat jointly secured the top rank.

Sudhakar Shinde, Additional Municipal Commissioner, expressed optimism, stating, “We have undertaken extensive efforts to improve cleanliness, and hence, next year we anticipate much better performance.” Despite the setback, the BMC remains committed to addressing cleanliness challenges in Mumbai.

Mumbai’s detailed report card in the survey revealed a score of 4446.19 out of 7,500, ranking it 189th nationally out of 446 cities across different population categories. In response to the results, BMC has initiated a ‘deep cleaning drive,’ personally monitored by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, involving the collection of debris and garbage every weekend in specific areas.

Thane secured the 14th position, Kalyan-Dombivli improved to the 22nd position, and Pune claimed the 10th position at the all-India level. The top 10 cleanest cities with a population of more than one lakh include Navi Mumbai, Greater Visakhapatnam, Bhopal, Vijayawada, New Delhi, Tirupati, Greater Hyderabad, and Pune.

In the ‘best-performing states’ category, Maharashtra was named the cleanest in the country, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, overturning the title held by Madhya Pradesh in the last annual survey.
