Mumbai Tourist Company Driver Arrested After Drunk-Driving Confrontation with Police

Mumbai, 12th January 2024: In a dramatic incident at Shivaji Park in Dadar, a tourist company driver, identified as Surendra Sujan Pawar (31), residing in Malvani, Malad, was apprehended by the Shivaji Park police. The arrest followed an aggressive encounter during a routine drunk-driving checkpoint.

The confrontation unfolded when Pawar, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, aggressively approached a drunk-driving checkpoint at Shivaji Park in his Wagon R car. Despite police instructions to slow down, Pawar sped through the barricades, prompting the police to pursue him.

Upon intercepting the vehicle, the police requested a breathalyzer test from Pawar. However, instead of cooperating, Pawar responded with verbal abuse, threw the breathalyzer machine onto the road, and physically assaulted the law enforcement officers. He also displayed resistance by asserting his identity.

During the scuffle, a police constable’s gold chain broke, and his Bluetooth device was damaged. Despite the aggressive resistance, the police successfully subdued Pawar and took him into custody.

Pawar was booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) – 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 427 (Mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) – and the Motor Vehicle Act section 185 (Driving under the influence of alcohol).

Following his arrest, Pawar was presented in court, where he was remanded to police custody for further legal proceedings. Constable Amit Kadam from Shivaji Park police station provided a detailed account of the incident, outlining Pawar’s non-compliance and the subsequent actions taken by the law enforcement officers.
