Mumbai: Amidst Cutting Of Trees, Roads Also Closed In ‘Aarey’ To Transport ‘Metro 3’ Coaches; Environmentalists Express Displeasure

Mumbai, 25th July 2022: The roads in Aarey were closed for 24 hours on Monday morning after the Shinde government announced that the car shed of ‘Metro 3’ would be set up in the Aarey Vasahat area instead of Kanjoor Marg.

The cutting down of trees on the roads in this area was started immediately. Two coaches for ‘Metro 3’ (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) will arrive in Mumbai soon and will be taken to the temporary car shed at Marol-Maroshi. The cutting of the trees is done for the same reason. However, environmentalists have expressed displeasure regarding the cutting of trees and their effects on the environment.

The traffic is also affected as the roads coming from Marol and Goregaon to the Aarey area were closed on Monday morning. The route of the BEST Bus (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport) running from the Aarey area was also diverted. These roads were closed to traffic for 24 hours and the cutting down of trees was started. MMRC officials refused to provide information about this.

The protestors of the ‘Save Aarey’ movement have become extremely furious over this car shed project in Aarey. Also, environmentalists who went to inquire about the work were turned away.

Environmentalist Sanjeev Valsan said, “We fear that MMRC will start car shed work after cutting down trees. The Supreme Court has adjourned the killing of trees in the car shed area in Aarey. Environmentalists who went to inquire about the ongoing work here are being turned away since this morning. Some environmentalists are being detained by the police.”
