Mumbai: CBI Files Case Against Deputy Superintendent of Police for Allegedly Accepting Rs 20 Lakh Bribe

Mumbai: Mumbai, 24th January 2025: The Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) in Mumbai has filed a case against its own Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), A Bhaskar, for allegedly accepting a ₹20 lakh bribe from a Customs official to influence an ongoing investigation.

The case, registered on January 10, was based on a complaint filed by DSP RK Pandey of the CBI’s ACB in Mumbai. Investigators found that the complaint raised prima facie evidence of misconduct involving Bhaskar and three others, leading to their inclusion in the First Information Report (FIR) filed on the same day.

The case relates to an investigation from March 2023, which Bhaskar was handling. It was initiated following a previous case filed by a CBI inspector, which uncovered a cartel of Customs officers and clearing agents who allegedly facilitated the illegal clearance of goods without proper customs duty using the passports of people who had been abroad for more than two years.

This marks the second time in recent months that a Mumbai-based DySP from the CBI has been implicated in a corruption case. On December 30, 2024, the Delhi unit of the CBI booked DySP BM Meena, who was then working with the banking securities fraud branch in Mumbai, for allegedly accepting bribes through intermediaries and hawala channels in exchange for favouring individuals involved in bank fraud investigations.
