Mumbai: CCTV Cameras Help Identify And Catch Accused In Several Crimes At Railway

Mumbai, 23rd March 2023: CCTV cameras are playing an important role in tracking accused roaming around crowded stations on the Western Railway. Therefore, it has become easier for the security system to find them and solve crimes. 120 crimes have been solved on Western Railway in January and February.

Railway Security Force (RPF) personnel of Western Railway have been deployed for the security of passengers and their property. RPF is conducting a special ‘Traveller Security’ campaign to prevent the theft of passengers’ belongings. CCTV cameras are of great help in this campaign. The accused are being searched based on the footage captured in the CCTV camera. Due to this, in January and February, 120 accused involved in crimes were found and arrested.

Recently, while looking at the footage from the CCTV camera at Kandivali station, it was noticed that the movement of a person was suspicious. When the concerned person was detained, he said his name was Suresh Prajapati (26). Upon further investigation, it was revealed that Prajapati was involved in seven crimes. It came to light that the accused looted mobile phones worth a total of Rs 1.38 lakh by stealing from Borivali, Kandivali, and Dahisar stations. Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, informed that the accused has been handed over to the Borivali Railway Police, and seven cases of theft have been registered against him.

Russian-made CCTV cameras have been installed in stations on the Western Railway. Russian-made CCTV cameras allow the identification of up to 50 passengers at a time in crowded places. These cameras are helping to identify the accused and trace the missing persons. 3,802 CCTV cameras have been installed in Western Railway. Out of them, 488 cameras are equipped with Facial Recognition System (FRS). To prevent crimes in the railway area, the details of the accused are uploaded into the system along with their photograph.
