Mumbai: Central Railway Faces Backlash as Festive Travelers Suffer Due to Altered Local Train Schedule

Mumbai, 14th November 2023: The Central Railway Administration’s decision to run local trains as per the Sunday schedule during the festive season has sparked outrage as 350 train journeys on the main and harbour lines were cancelled, causing significant inconvenience to passengers. Despite the Diwali holiday and festive season, the altered schedule disrupted travel plans for many citizens.

On Monday, locals ran as per the Sunday schedule, leading to delays of 15 to 20 minutes on the main line. The unexpected cancellations and delays created challenges for families travelling to visit relatives during the festive season. Passengers expressed frustration at the sudden changes, calling for regular train services without following the Sunday schedule during festivals.

In response to the public backlash, Central Railway has announced that trains will continue to run as per the Sunday schedule on Tuesday, Diwali Padwa. This decision has raised concerns about potential difficulties for those commuting during the festive season.

On a regular day, Central Railway operates 1,810 local trains. However, during the holiday schedule, the number is reduced to 1,460, including 673 trips on the main route, 501 on the harbour route, 246 on the trans-harbour route, and 40 on the BSU route. Despite offices being closed for Diwali, the festive season sees a surge in passengers travelling to be with their families, highlighting the need for seamless and efficient train services.
