Mumbai’s Air Quality Deteriorates Despite Rain Showers; Fireworks and Violations Contribute to Pollution Surge

Mumbai, 14th November 2023: Mumbai is grappling with worsening air quality for the third consecutive day, with extremely poor conditions reported on Monday, according to records from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board. Malad experienced very bad weather, registering an air quality index of 307, while Colaba recorded 207, Borivali 223, and Bandra Kurla Complex 223. The recent decline follows a period of improvement due to rain showers, but the resurgence of fireworks has reversed the positive trend.

Firecrackers, despite restrictions imposed by the Bombay High Court and Supreme Court of India, have contributed to increased air pollution in both Delhi and Mumbai during the Diwali festivities. Mumbai Police took action by registering 784 cases and penalizing 806 individuals for violating the time limit on bursting firecrackers, set between 8 to 10 pm.

The surge in air pollution has led to a visible haze over Mumbai, as captured in videos released by PTI. The municipality is working to address the situation and curb the impact of pollution on residents’ health.

Despite warnings and restrictions, fire accidents in Mumbai have increased in the last three days, with 35 incidents reported. The fire brigade attributes these accidents to firecrackers, emphasizing the need for caution during Diwali celebrations.

To mitigate the environmental impact, citizens are urged to avoid using firecrackers and opt for eco-friendly celebrations. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has issued guidelines to use cloth or paper bags instead of plastic and has appealed for a pollution-free Diwali. In case of fire emergencies during the festive season, residents are encouraged to contact the municipal administration at 101 or the civil relief service at 1916.
