Mumbai Faces Rough Sea and High Tides as Cyclone Biparjoy Weakens

Mumbai, 13th June 2023: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported a decrease in the intensity of the cyclone forming in the Arabian Sea, indicating a weakening of the storm. Cyclone Biparjoy is now expected to make landfall in Gujarat and Pakistan on June 15, with wind speeds ranging from 125 to 135 km per hour.

The impact of the storm is already being felt in Mumbai, where the sea has become rough, generating high waves at the Worli sea face and causing a high tide. As a result, Mumbai is predicted to experience heavy rainfall accompanied by gale force winds.

The Worli sea face in Mumbai is witnessing huge waves due to the high tide. Consequently, light to moderate rain with thunder is expected in Mumbai city and suburbs, with the sky remaining partly cloudy.

Occasional gales with wind speeds of 45-55 km per hour are also likely. The humid weather is expected to persist in Mumbai and its suburbs. The emergency department of the Mumbai Municipality is prepared for any contingencies arising from the cyclone.

Rainfall has already commenced in South Mumbai, leading to a spread of dew in the atmosphere. While sporadic showers have occurred in Mumbai and surrounding areas over the past few days, Thane and other regions beyond have yet to experience rainfall. The Palghar district administration has issued a ban, effective from June 13 to June 15, prohibiting people from approaching the coast in light of Cyclone Biparjoy.

Previously, rainfall was anticipated on June 7 this year, but the onset of the monsoon has been delayed due to Cyclone Biparjoy. As the cyclone gradually moves towards Gujarat, it has started raining in various parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai. However, farmers are growing increasingly concerned about the lack of pre-monsoon showers.

An orange alert has been issued for Kutch and Saurashtra in Gujarat, warning of heavy rainfall on June 15 and 16 due to Cyclone Biparjoy. Fishermen have been advised to refrain from venturing into the sea. The cyclone’s path is expected to cross the Arabian Sea towards Gujarat.
