Mumbai Police Ensure Safe New Year Celebrations with Robust Security Measures

Mumbai, 2nd January 2024: The New Year celebrations in Mumbai were marked by a robust security presence as over 13,000 police personnel effectively maintained law and order on the streets. To proactively address potential issues, the police conducted nakabandis (roadblocks) and spot assessments. Notably, they took action against numerous violators, particularly targeting helmet-less and drunk-driving individuals.

A total of 283 people were penalized for driving under the influence of alcohol, a significant increase from the previous year’s count of 156. The extensive deployment of police personnel covered 112 locations, resulting in inspections of 9025 vehicles. Among the violations addressed were 1090 cases of two-wheeler riders without helmets, 320 instances of wrong-side driving, and 80 cases of rash driving. Moreover, 310 vehicles faced penalties for jumping signals, while 299 four-wheelers were penalized for not using seatbelts. Additionally, 271 autos and taxis were penalized for refusing fares, and 107 two-wheelers were cited for triple-seat riding.

Parking violations were also addressed, with 1,119 vehicles penalized for unsafe or obstructive parking. These actions were taken by relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and Rules.

Special security measures were implemented at key locations like Gateway of India, Girgaon Chowpatty, and Marine Drive, as well as religious sites such as Siddhivinayak Temple, Mumbadevi Temple, and Mount Mary Church. The deployment of 150 police officers and 1,200 staff by the Mumbai Traffic Police played a crucial role in preventing traffic congestion during the festivities.

Various specialized units, including the Quick Response Team, State Reserve Police Force, Riot Control Police, and Home Guards, collaborated with Mumbai Police, Mumbai Traffic Police, and senior-level officials to ensure vigilant security throughout the city. Overall, the coordinated efforts of law enforcement successfully contributed to a peaceful and orderly New Year celebration in Mumbai.
