Thane: Kashimira Unit’s Special Drive Results in 48 DUI Arrests on New Year’s Eve

Mira Bhayandar, 2nd January 2024: On New Year’s Eve, the Kashimira unit of the traffic department, operating under the MBVV police and led by Senior Police Inspector Devidas Handore, initiated a special drive that saw the booking of 48 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol. Employing sophisticated GPS-enabled breath analyzers, the police not only identified the locations but also captured photographs of suspects. Printout receipts detailing alcohol consumption levels were immediately issued, and upon confirming intoxication, the police impounded the vehicles. The accused will now face legal proceedings in the district sessions court, Thane.

In addition to the cases on New Year’s Eve, 32 similar offences were recorded between December 25 and 30, bringing the total to 80 cases of drunk driving. The overall count of such cases in Mira Bhayandar and Vasai Virar on New Year’s Eve reached 104. It is noteworthy that in Mira Bhayandar, the Kashimira unit of the traffic police reported 26 and 32 cases of drunk driving on New Year’s Eve in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

To maintain order and prevent untoward incidents, a substantial law enforcement presence was deployed. Approximately 940 police personnel, including senior officials, were assisted by 285 traffic wardens and over 400 members of the Maharashtra Security Force (MSF) on patrolling duty. As part of comprehensive security arrangements, two teams of the riot control police (RCP) were also engaged, ensuring a vigilant watch until the early morning hours of the new year.
