Mumbai: Senior Resident Doctors Still Waiting For Bonded Service In Maharashtra

Mumbai, 18th July 2022: A week after the results of the postgraduate examinations, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) has not delivered the bonded services to the senior resident doctors. As a result, these doctors are waiting for compulsory bond services.

On the one hand, there is a shortage of postgraduate doctors across Maharashtra state. But on the other hand, the situation has arisen that the posts of senior resident doctors are not available.

One year of bonded service is mandatory for the students who have done post-graduation from a government medical college. They usually serve in government hospitals in rural areas and some hospitals in the urban areas. Last year, due to the second wave of coronavirus, the postgraduate exams were postponed. Therefore, the results of these students were announced and they needed to wait till October for them to join the bonded service.

Since the impact of coronavirus is not much this year, the postgraduate examinations have also been conducted on time and the results have also been announced in July. But since the bonded service of the senior doctors who joined last year will end in October, the students who have passed this year will have to wait until these seats become vacant. Also, it will take a month to create new posts, DMER said in a meeting with the students.

So, even if the result is announced, these students will have to wait for a few more months to get the bonded service.

The students say that the cycle of delays in examinations and thus extended period of bonded service will continue for years to come. Therefore, in order to correct this in time, the students who are currently serving in bonded service should give the examination period as senior resident post-experience certificate keeping in mind the uninterrupted service rendered during the Corona period. Also, DMER should approve the tuition fee for this period. Due to this, the duration of the bonded service will be reduced and the recently passed students can also be accommodated in the bonded service, the doctors who are providing the bonded service have requested DMER.
