Mumbai: Woman Killed, Husband Seriously Injured After Speeding Car Rams Scooter in Mumbai’s Malad; Accused Arrested

Mumbai, 2nd September 2026: A woman was killed and her husband sustained serious injuries after a speeding car allegedly rammed into their scooter at Mamledar Wadi Junction in Malad West on Sunday night. The impact also caused the car to collide with three autorickshaws, leaving five other people injured, police said.

The accused driver, identified as 65-year-old Krishna Chamankar, has been arrested by the Malad police. The case has also triggered allegations of preferential treatment being given to the accused at the police station, prompting the victim’s family to demand an independent inquiry.

Accident Occurred While Couple Was Returning Home

According to police officials, the accident took place at around 8 pm on Sunday near Mamledar Wadi Junction in Malad West.

The victims were identified as Mayank Shah, 35, and his wife Priyanka Shah, who was a practising lawyer. The couple was reportedly travelling home on their Activa scooter through the Malad Subway area when they stopped at a traffic signal.

Police said an MG Windsor car, allegedly being driven at high speed and in a rash and negligent manner by Krishna Chamankar, rammed into the couple’s scooter.

The collision was severe, leaving both Mayank and Priyanka critically injured. They were rushed for medical treatment; however, Priyanka succumbed to her injuries during treatment. Her husband Mayank suffered serious injuries and is receiving medical care.

Car Also Crashes Into Three Autorickshaws

The impact of the collision was not limited to the couple’s scooter.

According to the police, after hitting the Activa, the car continued forward and allegedly collided with three autorickshaws in the vicinity. The secondary collisions resulted in injuries to five passengers.

While some of those injured reportedly sustained serious injuries, others suffered minor injuries. Police are examining the sequence of events leading to the multiple collisions and investigating whether the accused lost control of the vehicle after hitting the scooter.

FIR Registered, Accused Arrested

Following the accident, a complaint was lodged by Mayank Shah’s brother, Manthan Devji Shah, 35.

Based on the complaint, the Malad police registered a case against Krishna Chamankar under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act.

The accused has been booked under:

– Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
– Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
– Sections 125(A) and 125(B) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
– Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act

Police said Chamankar was subjected to a medical examination before being formally arrested. Further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is underway.

Accused Previously Named in Maharashtra Sadan-Linked Case

According to police sources, Krishna Chamankar’s name has previously figured in a high-profile legal matter connected to the alleged Maharashtra Sadan scam case.

Chamankar, along with his brother Prasanna Chamankar, was among the developers named in proceedings related to the case. The matter was linked to former Maharashtra Public Works Department minister and NCP veteran Chhagan Bhujbal.

Police sources said the Chamankar brothers and their firm, K S Chamankar Enterprises, had also faced a money-laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate.

However, in September 2025, the Bombay High Court reportedly quashed the money-laundering case against the brothers and their firm.

The police investigation into Sunday’s fatal accident is separate from the earlier legal proceedings.

Victim’s Family Alleges Preferential Treatment at Police Station

Meanwhile, the case took another turn after Priyanka Shah’s cousin, Pravin Cheda, raised serious concerns regarding the alleged treatment received by the accused at the Malad police station following his arrest.

In a letter addressed to senior police officials, Cheda alleged that Chamankar was given preferential treatment while in police custody.

According to the allegations, the accused was allegedly allowed to use a mobile phone inside the lock-up. Cheda questioned why special privileges were allegedly extended to an accused involved in a fatal road accident.

He further alleged that at around 1.20 am, a woman police officer from Versova arrived at the Malad police station and took Chamankar out of the lock-up, reportedly citing the need for a medical check-up.

According to Cheda’s allegations, the accused was subsequently seated in an air-conditioned room located at the rear of the police station.

These allegations have raised questions regarding the handling of the accused after the accident.

Demand for Independent Inquiry

Pravin Cheda has demanded an independent inquiry into the alleged conduct of police personnel involved in handling the accused.

He has sought strict action against any police officials found responsible for providing unauthorised facilities or preferential treatment.

The victim’s family has demanded:

– An independent inquiry into the alleged preferential treatment
– Suspension and departmental action against police personnel found guilty
– A thorough investigation into the fatal accident
– Strict legal action against the accused in accordance with the seriousness of the offence

The family has also urged senior authorities to ensure that the investigation remains transparent and impartial.

Investigation Continues

The Malad police are continuing their investigation into the fatal crash. Investigators are expected to examine evidence including CCTV footage from the area, witness statements and other material to reconstruct the sequence of events.

The condition of the injured victims and the findings of the investigation are likely to play a crucial role in determining further legal action.

The incident has once again brought the issue of rash driving and road safety in Mumbai into focus. The death of Priyanka Shah and the serious injuries suffered by her husband have sparked concerns over dangerous driving on busy city roads and the need for strict enforcement of traffic laws.
