Onion Prices Drop In Mumbai Market Amid Increased Supply; Relief For Consumers

Mumbai, 21st March 2025: The recent drop in onion prices has brought relief to consumers, particularly homemakers, after months of high rates. Due to increased arrivals, prices at the Mumbai Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) have significantly declined. Over the past week, onions have been selling for ₹10 to ₹15 per kilogram, down from the previous average of ₹25 to ₹35, according to traders.

The supply of both red and white onions has surged, surpassing demand, which has led to the price drop. A week ago, onions were selling for ₹30 to ₹40 per kilogram at the market, but the rates have now fallen to ₹15 to ₹20. On Tuesday (18th March), the Vashi APMC received 112 vehicles, including 51 trucks and 61 tempos, carrying a total of 25,990 onion sacks. The consignments arrived from Nashik, Ahmednagar, Pune, Satara, and Sangli.

Traders attribute the price decline to a 30% increase in onion production this year across Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat, compared to last year. They predict that the prices will remain low until 15th April, with further reductions expected as stored onions from previous stockpiles begin to enter the market.

While the falling prices are beneficial for consumers, they are likely to hurt onion farmers, as the increased supply is pushing down their earnings.

The summer onion crop, which can be stored for up to eight months, is expected to keep prices stable. However, with the older stock soon entering the market, traders anticipate a further decline in onion prices.
