Gateway of India to Alibaug, Elephanta: E-Water Taxis Coming Soon in Mumbai

Mumbai, 22nd March 2025: In a move to ease traffic congestion and promote sustainable transport, Mumbai is set to introduce eco-friendly e-water taxis connecting Gateway of India with Elephanta and Alibaug. The initiative, led by Maharashtra Ports Minister Nitesh Rane, will be implemented as a pilot project in collaboration with Swedish boat manufacturer Candela.

The announcement came after Rane met Sven Ostberg, the Consul General of Sweden in Mumbai, on Friday to discuss the proposal. The Swedish company is known for its cutting-edge electric hydrofoil boats, which offer an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional water transport.

Government Push for Sustainable Transport
Speaking on the project, Minister Rane emphasized the need for alternative transport solutions in Mumbai.
“Mumbai’s transport system is under tremendous pressure, and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is keen on launching e-water taxis as soon as possible. This project will not only reduce travel time but also contribute to eco-friendly mobility,” he said.
He further added that the state government will facilitate necessary licenses to ensure the smooth implementation of the service.

Swedish Collaboration and Safety Measures
Highlighting Sweden’s role in the project, Consul General Sven Ostberg expressed enthusiasm about the initiative and Sweden’s involvement in Maharashtra’s port development.

“We are excited about this collaboration and will soon present all necessary details regarding the pilot project. Our aim is to bring safe, efficient, and sustainable water transport to Mumbai,” said Ostberg.

The Swedish-built e-water taxis will focus on safety, environmental impact, and affordability to make them accessible to the public. Once the pilot project is successfully executed, more routes may be introduced to expand Mumbai’s water transport network.
