Thane: Mira-Bhayandar Prepares for Lok Sabha Polls: 149 Arms License Holders Surrender Weapons

Thane, 2nd April 2024: As the nation prepares for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) police are diligently strategizing to ensure the smooth and fair conduct of the polling process.

By directives from the police and district administration, 149 arms license holders in the twin city of Mira-Bhayandar have voluntarily deposited their licensed weapons at their respective police stations under Zone 1 of the MBVV police jurisdiction.

A senior police official stated that out of a total of 196 licensed arms holders, 149 have already complied with the requirement to deposit their weapons following the implementation of the model code of conduct for the parliamentary elections. Exceptions are made for 19 arms holders affiliated with entities like public/private sector banks and their security agencies, with efforts underway to ensure the remaining few also deposit their weapons in the coming days.

The electoral code of conduct mandates arms license holders to deposit their weapons at police stations to uphold law and order and facilitate peaceful elections. These deposited weapons will be returned to their owners after June 11.

Additionally, the police have compiled a roster of individuals categorized as goons, anti-social elements, and habitual troublemakers, with plans for necessary preventive actions, including the issuance of externment (tadi-paari) orders by the provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) of 1973. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the potential for any law and order disruptions during the election period.
