Thane Municipal Corporation Falls Victim to Fraud: Loses Over Rs 5 Lakh in Falsified Contract Scheme

Thane, 9th May 2024: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) in Maharashtra fell victim to a fraudulent scheme, resulting in a loss of over Rs 5 lakh, as confirmed by an official statement on Wednesday.

Initially, the civic body awarded a contract to a contractor for constructing toilets and collected a security deposit amounting to Rs 5.10 lakh.

However, an individual or group presented falsified documents to the corporation, falsely asserting that the construction work had been completed and prompting a refund of the security deposit.

Subsequently, the TMC issued a refund of Rs 5.10 lakh based on the misrepresented information, as indicated in the official complaint lodged by the TMC. The deception was uncovered during a routine audit, revealing the discrepancy, the official explained.

In response, the Naupada police initiated legal action on Tuesday by registering a case and commencing an investigation into the matter.
