Toyota Unveils Plans for New Rugged SUV: A Cost-Effective Fortuner Alternative Set to Debut Globally

India, 6th March 2024: Toyota is embarking on a groundbreaking venture in the automotive industry, unveiling plans for an all-new rugged SUV designed to provide consumers with a smaller and more cost-effective alternative to the popular Fortuner. Scheduled for a global debut later this year, the upcoming SUV will initially launch in Thailand.

– Positioned Below Fortuner: Toyota’s latest offering is strategically positioned below the Fortuner, offering customers an accessible yet durable vehicle option.

– Platform and Powertrain Sharing: The new SUV will mirror the Fortuner’s platform and powertrain systems, ensuring a reliable and seamless driving experience.

– Thailand Debut: Enthusiasts in Thailand will have the opportunity to be the first to experience Toyota’s innovative SUV, underscoring the company’s global outlook.

Toyota hinted at its plans for an “affordable Fortuner” SUV last October, with President of Toyota Motor Asia Pacific, Hao Quoc Tien, suggesting at last year’s Tokyo motor show that the IMV 0 project could expand beyond pickups to include an SUV body style similar to the Fortuner.

The upcoming SUV speculated to adopt names like Toyota FJ Cruiser or Land Cruiser FJ, will share its foundation with the recently introduced Toyota Hilux Champ pickup in Thailand and Indonesia. Rooted in the renowned IMV project, which has produced iconic models like the Hilux, Fortuner, and Innova, this SUV promises to uphold the legacy with modern enhancements.

Featuring boxy and retro aesthetics, the SUV will inherit the Innova Crysta and Fortuner’s 2,750mm wheelbase, offering versatile seating configurations with options for two and three rows. Inside, expect a blend of functionality and sophistication, with upgrades including premium materials and advanced technology.

With multiple powertrain options, including diesel engines ranging from 2.4 to 2.8 litres and petrol engines like the 2.7-litre featured in the Fortuner in India, the new SUV promises versatility and performance.

Considering the cancellation of Toyota’s all-new C-SUV for the Indian market, the introduction of this smaller Fortuner SUV could address a significant market gap. The extensive localization of the IMV platform in India, coupled with the demand for rugged SUVs in the price range between the Innova Crysta and Fortuner, suggests a promising business opportunity.

While Toyota’s decision to introduce this SUV in India remains uncertain, the potential for an affordable and robust Toyota SUV has generated considerable anticipation among Indian consumers. Stay tuned for further updates on Toyota’s pioneering venture into the rugged SUV segment.
