U.S. Informs Mumbai Police about Brother of Lawrence Bishnoi, Extradition Efforts Underway
Mumbai, 2nd November 2024: U.S. authorities recently informed Mumbai Police of Anmol Bishnoi’s presence in their country, marking a step forward in efforts to contain the activities of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Acting on this information, Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch moved a special court last month, seeking Anmol’s extradition.
On October 16, Mumbai Police presented before the court their intent to initiate Anmol’s extradition for his alleged involvement in the April firing incident outside actor Salman Khan’s residence. According to senior officials, with Lawrence Bishnoi already in custody, Anmol has allegedly led significant operations, including the attack outside Khan’s home. Anmol’s name also surfaced in the recent killing of NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) leader Baba Siddique; he is accused of having communicated with the shooter involved.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) recently announced a reward of ₹10 lakh for Anmol, linking him to 18 criminal cases, including his alleged role in arming those accused in the 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. Following this, Mumbai Police named Anmol as a wanted individual in Khan’s chargesheet, issuing a Red Corner Notice (RCN). According to officials, U.S. authorities reached out upon identifying Anmol’s presence in the country, though it’s unclear if he’s currently detained there.
In light of the miscellaneous application filed, the court permitted Mumbai Police to complete the necessary documentation. The Ministry of Home Affairs has since received these documents and will coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs, which will liaise with U.S. authorities. If successful, Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch, which initiated the RCN, will gain custody of Anmol. Meanwhile, Lawrence Bishnoi remains in Sabarmati prison, Gujarat.
The development gains significance amid recent tensions between India and Canada. Following India’s diplomatic pullback from Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police accused Indian “agents” of working with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang to incite violence in Canada—a claim India has firmly rejected. Notably, the alert regarding Anmol coincides with recent action by the U.S. Department of Justice in the case surrounding the alleged plot to assassinate Khalistan separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. In December 2023, Vikash Yadav, accused of this plot, was arrested in an extortion case by Delhi Police’s Special Cell. His arrest was connected to an extortion and kidnapping complaint, allegedly tied to Lawrence Bishnoi’s network.
