Virar-Alibaug Multi-Purpose Highway: Morbe-Karanjade Route To Be Made In First Phase

Mumbai, 3rd January 2023: In the new year, the work of the Virar-Alibaug multi-purpose highway, which is considered very important for the development of Mumbai and the Mumbai metropolitan region, will soon begin. The 128 km long highway will be constructed in phases. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has planned to start the work on the first phase of the 20 km Morbe-Karanjade road in the next six months.

The project, which was undertaken to solve the problem of traffic congestion in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and reduce the distance between Virar and Alibaug, has been stalled for more than 13 years. But now, MSRDC is gearing up to launch this project. Fundraising for this project is in progress. On the other hand, MSRDC has started preparations to start the actual work. A senior official from MSRDC informed that this project will be started on priority in the new year. This project is 128 km long, and large-scale land acquisition has to be done. MSRDC has to meet the big challenge of land acquisition. Also, land acquisition is likely to take a long time. Against this backdrop, MSRDC has decided to undertake land acquisition and construction in phases.

According to this decision, in the first phase, the work of the 20 km long road Morbe – Karanjade will be taken up. The official said that the work will be started in the next six months after completing the land acquisition in this route. In these six months, the process of raising loans through HUDCO has to be completed. Overall, this project is considered important for the development of Mumbai and MMR.
