12th Mar 2024: Indian sailor Vishnu Saravanan clinched the gold medal in the men’s one-person dinghy (ILCA7) category at the Europa Cup 2024 sailing meet held in Mallorca, Spain. Saravanan’s victory adds to his achievements after securing a Paris 2024 Olympics quota for India earlier this year.

Saravanan emerged victorious in the highly competitive 91-boat race, finishing with 17 net points. Despite facing tough competition, including a tie with the Netherlands’ Willem Wiersema, Saravanan’s exceptional performance secured him the top spot in the ILCA7 category.

Australia’s Lawson McAullay claimed the bronze medal with 22 net points, showcasing the intense competition and skill on display at the event, organized by the Reial Club Nautic Port de Pollenca.

Competing in the ILCA7 category, a part of the International Laser Class Association, Saravanan demonstrated remarkable consistency and skill, winning two of his seven races amidst challenging wind conditions ranging from 15 to +30 knots throughout the three-day competition.

In January, Saravanan made history by becoming the first Indian sailor to secure a sailing quota for the Paris 2024 Olympics at the ILCA 7 Men’s World Championship 2024 in Australia. His exceptional performance and dedication have positioned him as a strong contender for future Olympic glory.

As the National Olympic Committees hold exclusive authority over athlete representation at the Olympic Games, Saravanan’s participation at the Paris Games hinges on his selection by the Indian delegation for Paris 2024.

A seasoned competitor, Saravanan previously represented India at the Tokyo Olympics, finishing 20th in a competitive field. If selected, he will join the ranks of Farokh Tarapore as only the second Indian sailor to compete in multiple Olympic Games, following Tarapore’s appearances at the Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988, and Barcelona 1992 Summer Olympics.

Saravanan’s achievements also include securing the bronze medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year, further solidifying his reputation as a top contender in international sailing.
