Pune: PCMC to Enforce Four-Way Waste Segregation From Aug 15, Warns of Action

Pune, 23rd July 2026: Every household, housing society and commercial establishment in Pimpri Chinchwad will have to compulsorily segregate waste into four categories from August 15, with the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) warning of action against those violating the revised Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.

The move is part of the civic body’s larger strategy to reform waste management in the aftermath of the Moshi landfill collapse and reduce reliance on a single dumping site by promoting decentralised waste processing.

According to PCMC officials, the revised rules, framed in accordance with Supreme Court directions, require all waste generators to separately store wet, dry, sanitary and special care waste. The civic administration said compliance will be monitored strictly from August 15 and violators will face penal action.

Earlier requirement of segregating waste into two or three streams has now been replaced with a mandatory four-way segregation system as per the revised Solid Waste Management Rules 2026.

Officials said the stricter rules are central to PCMC’s plan to decentralise solid waste management by setting up multiple processing facilities across the city. Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi has already announced that the civic body will identify land in each of the city’s 10 ward offices for establishing decentralised waste processing plants, a move aimed at strengthening the city’s waste management system and preventing overdependence on a single disposal site.
