Adverse Climatic Conditions Bring Price Fluctuations To Vegetable Markets In Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumbai, 24th July 2023: In the bustling APMC markets of Navi Mumbai, the recent heavy showers and climatic conditions in some parts of the state have caused significant disruptions in the onion and garlic trade. The effects have been dramatic, with the prices of onions experiencing a rollercoaster ride between the wholesale and retail markets in Navi Mumbai.
Due to the decline in the quality of onions caused by adverse weather conditions in some parts of Maharashtra, only 20% of good-quality onions are currently available in the market. The scarcity of high-quality onions led to an initial surge in demand, subsequently driving up prices.
However, in the last week, fresh supplies of onions entered the market. Consequently, the new influx of produce caused a drop in prices, providing some relief to consumers. As of now, onions are available in the wholesale market for as low as Rs 10 and as high as Rs 16 per kg.
But, despite the decline in prices at the APMC, the retail market has failed to reflect the same trend. Onions are still being sold in retail stores at an astonishing double the wholesale price, fetching Rs 25-30 per kg.
Meanwhile, the story is quite different for garlic. Alongside the impact of the rains, the onset of the holy month of Shravan has led to a decrease in garlic sales at the APMC market. Additionally, the sufficient storage of remaining garlic in the market has caused a significant drop in its price by Rs 10 to 20 per kg.
