Heatwave Sweeps Mumbai and Adjacent Areas, IMD Issues Warning

Mumbai, 29th April 2024: Mumbai and its neighboring regions experienced scorching heatwave conditions for the second time this season, as daytime temperatures soared beyond the 37-degree Celsius mark. The Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Santacruz observatory reported a maximum temperature of 38.1 degrees Celsius on Sunday, marking the second-highest reading recorded this month. Notably, on April 16, the city experienced a sweltering high of 39.7 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, IMD’s Colaba observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 34.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday, slightly surpassing the previous day’s reading of 33 degrees Celsius. In Santacruz, temperatures reached 36.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday, signaling a notable uptick in heat levels.

IMD’s latest forecast for Monday indicates the persistence of heatwave conditions at isolated locations across Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad. While Tuesday may see a respite from heatwave warnings, hot and humid conditions are expected to prevail in isolated areas of these regions. Additionally, dry weather conditions are projected to persist from May 1 onward.

Abhijit Modak, an independent weather forecaster renowned for his Konkan weather blog, attributed Sunday’s temperature surge to dry northerly and northeasterly land breezes influenced by a seasonal high-pressure system over the north-central Arabian Sea.

Echoing similar sentiments, independent meteorologist Rushikesh Agre, known for his contributions to the Mumbai Rains X handle, forecasted continued heat with temperatures hovering around 38-39 degrees Celsius over the next two days in Mumbai. Agre anticipates a gradual decline in temperatures post-May 1, offering some relief from the prevailing heatwave conditions.

As Mumbai residents brace themselves for the sweltering heat ahead, authorities urge caution and adherence to safety guidelines to mitigate the impact of the ongoing heatwave.
