Mumbai: Human Leg Found During Maintenance of Amritsar–CSMT Express; GRP Launches Probe

Mumbai, 17th July 2026: An amputated human leg was found entangled beneath a coach of the Amritsar–CSMT Express during routine maintenance at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) coaching yard on Friday, prompting an investigation by the Government Railway Police (GRP).

According to Central Railway, the body part was discovered during the undergear inspection of Coach M2 of Train No. 11058 Amritsar–CSMT Express on July 17. Maintenance staff on duty noticed what appeared to be a human leg below the knee lodged underneath the coach.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police were immediately informed through the Station Manager. GRP personnel reached the coaching yard, conducted the panchanama and initiated the required legal formalities.

The amputated body part was later sent to St. George’s Government Hospital for forensic examination and further investigation.

Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, Swapnil Nila, said it is likely to be a case of a human run-over caused by trespassing or an accident. He added that investigators are examining the entire route of the train from its originating station, Amritsar, to its destination, CSMT, to determine where the incident may have occurred.

The investigation is underway to establish the identity of the victim and the exact location and circumstances under which the body part became entangled beneath the train.
