Mumbai: FDA Closes KEM Nursing College Canteen After Larva Found
Mumbai, 18th July 2026: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered the immediate closure of the hostel canteen at KEM Hospital’s Nursing College in Parel after a student allegedly discovered a larva in a meal served at the facility.
Following the complaint, FDA officials conducted a surprise inspection of the canteen and reportedly found multiple violations related to hygiene and food safety. Based on the inspection, authorities directed the canteen to cease operations with immediate effect.
In addition to shutting down the canteen, the FDA suspended the licence of the food vendor responsible for supplying meals to the hostel. Officials also collected four food samples from the premises and sent them for laboratory analysis to determine whether the food was contaminated or unfit for consumption.
The canteen serves students residing at the nursing college attached to KEM Hospital, one of Mumbai’s largest civic healthcare institutions. With the canteen now closed, alternative food arrangements are expected to be made for the hostel residents.
FDA officials stated that further action will depend on the laboratory test results. If serious violations are confirmed, the vendor may face additional regulatory or legal proceedings under food safety laws.
The incident has once again raised concerns over food quality and hygiene standards in institutional kitchens, particularly those catering to students and hospital staff. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken if negligence is established.
An investigation into the matter is currently underway, while the FDA has not yet announced when the canteen will be allowed to resume operations.
