Mumbai’s Juma Masjid Recognized by Ministry of Tourism for Cultural Heritage

Mumbai, 19th April 2024: India’s Ministry of Tourism has recognized Mumbai’s iconic Juma Masjid on its official website, showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage and aiming to attract more visitors. The Juma Masjid, which is over two centuries old and located near Crawford Market, is managed by the trustees who view this recognition as a significant achievement.

Shoeb Khatib, the trustee of the Juma Masjid, expressed his honour at the inclusion of the mosque in the ministry’s “Incredible India” project, which highlights India’s notable attractions. The mosque’s timeless architecture features numerous arches, stained glass windows, and Burmese teak elements, making it one of the most captivating mosques in the country.

Situated atop a natural pond inhabited by tortoises and fish, the mosque’s tranquil surroundings add to its serene atmosphere. The Juma Masjid is also the centre for Mumbai’s “Hilal or Chand Committee,” responsible for tracking the new crescent moon to determine the start and end of Ramadan.

In a progressive step two years ago, the mosque added a dedicated prayer area for women, a feature rarely seen in traditional mosques. This addition serves not only worshippers but also female shoppers in the busy market who may lack access to adequate public facilities.

With the Ministry of Tourism highlighting the Juma Masjid on its platform, an increase in visitors from both domestic and international travellers is expected.
