Navi Mumbai’s NMMC Hospitals Embrace Technology for Patient Data Management

Navi Mumbai, 19th April 2024: The health department of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is set to undergo a significant transformation by embracing technology for processing and storing patient-related data. Additionally, the administration is working towards establishing its first milk bank for newborns.

The municipal administration is focusing on fully implementing its e-governance system across the three civic hospitals. “The goal is to digitize the entire patient treatment process in civic hospitals,” stated municipal commissioner Kailas Shinde. During a meeting with the medical department, officials were instructed to create a plan for promptly implementing the new process. “Currently, the only digitized aspect of the hospital is the initial billing process. With full digitization, all treatment-related processes will be available online,” said a medical department official.

Given the over 1,000 babies born each month in municipal hospitals, officials stress the need for a milk bank to support newborns. Approximately 20% of these births are premature or involve serious health issues requiring extended hospital stays. “For preterm infants or when mothers cannot produce enough milk, hospitals provide formula milk. Establishing a milk bank would significantly benefit newborns,” said Nerul NMMC hospital superintendent Uddhav Khilare.

Commissioner Shinde emphasized the importance of setting up the milk bank as soon as possible. “Civic hospitals already have cold storage units for milk preservation, and the necessary laboratory facilities for testing samples will be established promptly,” he added. The milk bank is planned to be located at the General Hospital in Vashi.
