Tata Sons AGM Postponed: First Such Deferral In 108-Year History

Mumbai, 18th August 2026: Tata Sons’ 108th Annual General Meeting (AGM) was adjourned on Tuesday after the company failed to meet the required quorum, marking the first such instance in its history.

The AGM was scheduled for August 18, but the meeting could not proceed as the minimum number of members required to conduct it was not present. The meeting will now be held on a later date.

The development comes at a crucial time for the Tata Group, just days after Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran announced that he would not seek reappointment when his current term ends in February 2027.

Chandrasekaran’s decision followed disagreements with Tata Trusts, which is the controlling shareholder of Tata Sons. Tata Trusts has since formed a selection committee to recommend a successor.

The quorum issue is linked to restrictions affecting the Sir Ratan Tata Trust. The trust has been unable to appoint a representative for the AGM after the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner imposed restrictions on it. Tata Trusts had earlier said that it could not jointly nominate a representative with the trust for the meeting.

The absence of the required representative created uncertainty over whether the AGM could go ahead. Tata Sons had indicated that the meeting would be adjourned if the quorum requirement was not met.

The postponed AGM comes amid wider questions around Tata Sons’ leadership and governance. Apart from Chandrasekaran’s succession, the group is also facing discussions around the future of Tata Sons, including a potential public listing and the relationship between Tata Trusts and the company’s professional management.

The new date for the AGM is expected to be announced after the company consults its board.
