150 Artificial Ponds To Be Constructed In Mumbai For Immersion Of Ganesha Idols
Mumbai, 21st 2022: Preparations for Ganeshotsav which is just 10 days away, are going on in Mumbai. This year, plaster of Paris (POP) Ganesha idols have been banned from being immersed in artificial lakes.
Therefore, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has decided to increase the number of artificial lakes this year and 150 artificial lakes will be made available throughout Mumbai.
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has banned POPs in view of the damage they cause to the environment. However, the ban orders could not be implemented in the last two years.
Considering the number of household Ganeshas in Mumbai, it has been decided to increase the number of artificial ponds for immersion of Ganesha idols of POP. Last year, Ganesh idols were immersed in 88 artificial lakes in Mumbai. Keeping in mind the restrictions imposed this year, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has decided to build a total of 150 artificial lakes in various places. Devotees have to prominently mention ‘Plaster of Paris’ on these idols. Officials of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation said that this restriction has been imposed so that the idol of POP can be recognised quickly.
In order not to pollute the sea or natural sources, it has been made mandatory to immerse Ganesha idols of POP only in artificial lakes. A total of 150 artificial lakes will be provided within the limits of 24 administrative department offices of the Municipal Corporation.
