Meat Shop in Navi Mumbai Faces Backlash Over Goat Named “Ram” for Sale

Mumbai, 17th June 2024: Mumbai Police took action against the owner of a meat shop in Navi Mumbai following the circulation of a viral social media post depicting a goat with the name of the Hindu deity “Ram” printed on its skin, slated for sale ahead of the Eid al-Adha (Bakrid) festival.

“In response to the complaint, a case has been registered under CBD Belapur Police Station Crime Register No. 123/2024,” stated the police in a post on Saturday.

Preliminary reports indicate that the goat, bearing the name of Ram, was being offered for sale at the Good Luck Mutton Shop in CBD Sector One, Navi Mumbai. The shop owner has been detained by the police, informed an official.

Several Hindu organizations raised objections on social media platforms. One user, Hindutva Knight (@HPhobiaWatch), expressed outrage, stating, “This is unacceptable. A goat from ‘Good Luck Mutton store’ with Ram’s name inscribed on it, to be slaughtered openly during Bakrid, appears designed to provoke the Hindu community. Urging @Navimumpolice, @MumbaiPolice, to take stringent action to prevent any potential law and order disturbances.”
