Mumbai: Fire in Ghatkopar Building Causes Suffocation for Thirteen; 90 Residents Evacuated

Mumbai, 14th September 2024: Thirteen individuals experienced suffocation after a fire broke out on the ground floor of a seven-story building in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, early Saturday morning, according to officials.

The fire started at 1:35 am in the electric meter room of the Shanti Sagar Building in Ramabai Colony, Pantnagar, Ghatkopar East. Approximately 90 residents were evacuated by the fire brigade.

The blaze was contained to the wiring and installations in the meter room but caused smoke to spread throughout the building. Firefighters rescued 80 to 90 people from various floors using the staircase, and the fire was brought under control by 2:05 am.

Thirteen people suffered from smoke inhalation; twelve were taken to a local hospital, while one was treated and discharged from the outpatient department. Among the injured, nine are women. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
