Mumbai: Digital Signboards With QR Codes Introduced to Boost Safety on Mumbai–Goa Highway

Mumbai, 22nd November 2025: Commuters on the Mumbai–Goa Highway will soon be able to access real-time travel assistance on their phones, with the Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) launching a new system of QR-enabled signboards across the route.

The move marks a major step in the government’s push toward digitalizing road infrastructure and improving safety standards on busy national and state highways. The Mumbai–Goa stretch is among the first corridors to adopt the technology.

What Motorists Can Access Through the QR Codes
Each signboard will display a scannable QR code that immediately provides:
Contractor details and the scope of ongoing roadwork
Spots for essential services such as fuel pumps, hospitals, police stations, and accommodation
Information on EV charging points
Distances to upcoming toll plazas
Nearby puncture and repair facilities
Contact numbers of toll managers, maintenance teams, and resident engineers
Emergency helplines, including national number 1033
Updates on repairs, blockages, and construction timelines

Importantly, motorists will not need to download any dedicated app to use the feature.

According to officials, the digitized system is expected to play a crucial role during breakdowns or accidents. A quick scan will connect travelers to highway patrol units or engineers responsible for that particular stretch, enabling faster coordination and reducing emergency response time.

The first QR-enabled signboard has been installed at Hatkhamba near Ratnagiri, marking the start of the initiative in the Konkan belt. More boards will be added in phases along the Mumbai–Goa corridor.

Authorities say the project will not only streamline travel but also improve road transparency, support quick assistance during emergencies, and ultimately enhance overall commuter safety.
