Mumbai International Airport Restores Both Runways After Scheduled Maintenance Work
Mumbai, 7th May 2026: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), operated by Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), has successfully completed its annual runway maintenance programme ahead of the monsoon season, strengthening operational safety and infrastructure resilience at one of India’s busiest airports.
The scheduled maintenance exercise was carried out over a six-hour period from 11 am to 5 pm and included a comprehensive inspection of Runway 09/27, which measures 3,448 metres, and Runway 14/32, measuring 2,871 metres. Airport authorities confirmed that both runways have now been restored and are fully operational.
The airport operator said the maintenance programme was planned several months in advance, with stakeholder coordination beginning nearly six months earlier to allow airlines sufficient time to realign flight schedules and minimise inconvenience to passengers.
CSMIA handles more than 950 air traffic movements daily, making preventive maintenance essential to maintaining safety and operational efficiency, especially during the high-intensity monsoon season.
According to airport officials, the maintenance work included pavement repairs, electrical inspections of Airfield Ground Lighting systems and substations, rubber removal from runway surfaces, repainting of surface markings, and extensive drain cleaning to improve water discharge during heavy rainfall.
Technical teams also carried out inspections of runway intersections, more than 3,000 runway lights, and critical cable networks supporting lighting systems, information technology infrastructure, and navigational equipment to ensure uninterrupted airport operations.
Airport authorities stated that the annual maintenance programme plays a key role in ensuring runway safety, improving drainage infrastructure, and enhancing the airport’s preparedness for adverse weather conditions during the monsoon.
By combining advance planning with targeted infrastructure maintenance, CSMIA said it continues to focus on safety, operational reliability, and resilience in one of the country’s most demanding aviation environments.
