MGL Raises CNG Prices by Rs 2/kg Across Mumbai Metropolitan Region
Mumbai, 14th May 2026: State-run gas distributor Mahanagar Gas Limited has increased the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) by Rs 2 per kilogram across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), adding to the burden on daily commuters and transport operators.
Following the latest revision, the retail price of CNG in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and adjoining MMR areas has risen to Rs 84 per kg with immediate effect. The earlier rate stood at Rs 82 per kg.
According to the company, the hike comes amid rising gas procurement costs, increasing crude oil prices, rupee depreciation, and disruptions in the global energy supply chain linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
The move has already triggered demands for a fare revision from auto-rickshaw unions in Mumbai. Union representatives have sought at least a Rs 1 increase in the base fare, arguing that repeated fuel price hikes are making it difficult for drivers to operate under the current fare structure.
The hike is expected to impact lakhs of commuters across the MMR, where CNG remains one of the primary fuels used by auto-rickshaws, taxis, and several public transport vehicles. Any increase in transport fares could further add pressure on household expenses at a time when fuel and living costs continue to remain elevated.
The revision also comes amid broader concerns over the global energy market, with supply disruptions and rising crude oil prices affecting fuel costs worldwide. Industry observers believe other city gas distributors may also review prices if procurement costs continue to rise.
Meanwhile, shares of Mahanagar Gas Limited traded higher following the announcement, with investors closely watching the impact of rising energy prices on the company’s margins and future demand.
