Mumbai: 140 BJP Yuva Morcha, MNS Workers Detained Amid Mahim Protest

Mumbai, 2nd September 2026: Tension prevailed in Mumbai’s Mahim area on Tuesday after workers of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) staged a protest against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Amit Thackeray. Mumbai Police detained a total of 140 workers from both political groups as a preventive measure to avoid any escalation.

According to police officials, 106 BJYM office-bearers and workers were detained after they gathered in the Gangavihar area under the jurisdiction of Mahim Police Station at around 3.30 pm. Meanwhile, 34 MNS office-bearers were also taken into custody after assembling at MNS Branch No. 190 to oppose the BJP youth wing’s protest.

The protest was triggered by a controversy surrounding a video from Pune that surfaced on social media and quickly went viral. The video allegedly showed Amit Thackeray asking MNS workers to remove a photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from a wall during his visit to a college.

BJP workers strongly objected to the alleged incident, accusing Thackeray and his supporters of disrespecting the Prime Minister. The BJYM subsequently announced a protest in Mahim, prompting MNS workers to gather in large numbers outside their local party office.

With members of both political groups assembling in the same locality, police deployed additional personnel to prevent a possible confrontation and maintain law and order.

Police said preventive action was taken against members of both groups under Sections 68 and 69 of the Maharashtra Police Act. After being issued warnings, all those detained were later released.

A Mumbai Police official confirmed that no police personnel were injured during the protest or the subsequent preventive action.

The incident highlights the growing political tension between the BJP and MNS following the viral video controversy involving Amit Thackeray.
