Mumbai: Gold, Foreign Currency, Narcotics Worth Rs 120 Crore Seized By Customs Department In Various Operations

Mumbai, 10th February 2023: Gold, foreign currency and narcotics worth Rs 120 crore were seized in various operations conducted by the Mumbai Customs Department in January. It includes drugs worth Rs 75 crore, gold worth Rs 42 crore and foreign currency worth Rs 3.5 crore. The seized drugs include cocaine and heroin in large quantities.

The Bombay Customs Department’s Air Intelligence Cell seized around 81 kg of gold in January 2023. Its cost is around Rs 42 crore. Attempts were made to smuggle gold through trolley bags by sticking it on the body, hiding it in sandals and waist belts, and using various disguises.

In January 2023, foreign currency worth Rs 3.47 crore was seized from passengers in eight separate cases. It includes 236 thousand US dollars, 38 thousand pounds sterling, 455 thousand UAE dirhams, and 40 thousand Saudi Riyals. Currency was smuggled using innovative methods of concealing it in the pages of books and cardboard boxes used for fruit.

The Mumbai Customs Department has launched a drive against drug smuggling and seized 4 kg 470 grams of heroin and 4 kg 406 grams of cocaine worth a total of Rs 75.35 crore in three separate operations. The drugs were smuggled in by hiding them in folders of documents, buttons on clothes and hidden pockets in bags.
