BIS Conducts Enforcement Raid at Jewellery Outlet in Badlapur, Seizes 251 Grams of Spurious Gold Jewellery

Thane, 19 March 2025: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Mumbai Branch Office – II, conducted a search and seizure operation at M/s Jay Bhawani Jewellers in Badlapur East, Thane, on March 19, 2025. During the raid, BIS officials seized 251.390 grams of gold jewellery, valued at approximately ₹21 lakh, for lacking Hallmark Unique Identification Digit (HUID) and bearing spurious hallmark symbols.

The operation was conducted in line with the Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts (Amendment) Order, 2023, which mandates that no jeweller shall sell gold jewellery without a valid HUID mark after March 31, 2023. The seized jewellery allegedly violated this regulation, prompting further legal action.

Under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, the jeweller faces the possibility of imprisonment for up to one year, a fine ranging from ₹1 lakh to five times the value of the seized goods, or both, pending court decisions.

BIS has been conducting similar enforcement actions to curb the sale of counterfeit gold products and protect consumer interests. Consumers are urged to verify the authenticity of gold jewellery through the BIS Care App before purchase. Reports of misuse of BIS Standard Marks, such as ISI Mark, BIS Registration Mark, and BIS Hallmark, can be submitted via email, letter, or the BIS Care App. The identity of complainants will remain confidential.
