BMC Pushes for Timely Completion of Cement Concrete Roads in Mumbai

Mumbai, 28 March 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed that concreting work in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region be completed from end to end without interruptions, with a target deadline of May 31, 2025. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Project) Abhijeet Bangar emphasized micro-planning and fixing road-wise completion dates. In cases where complete road work cannot be finished in time, work should be completed from junction to junction.

During an inspection of road concreting work in the western suburbs on March 27, 2025, Bangar observed ongoing work at Ramchandra Marg in Kachpada, Malad West, Parekh Galli in Kandivali West, and Mahavir Nagar Marg. A surprise inspection was also carried out at Dadiseth Marg in Malad West, Malad Shopping Center, and near Balaji Hotel.

At Dadiseth Marg, it was noted that barricades were placed on only one side while the opposite side had a dangerously open chamber due to ongoing sewage operations. Bangar ordered strict action against the responsible engineer and directed immediate placement of barricades.

During inspections near Malad Shopping Center and Balaji Hotel, Bangar instructed that the road level on the non-concreting side be maintained to ensure smooth traffic flow, particularly for two-wheelers. Engineers are mandated to be present on-site during road works, and contractors must install appropriate barricades to manage traffic.

Information boards displaying project details, including start and completion dates, work duration, and dimensions, were observed at work sites on Ramchandra Marg, Parekh Galli, and Mahavir Nagar Marg. QR codes for additional information were also verified by Bangar. Quality tests, including slump, angle, and pavement quality concrete (PQC) cube tests conducted by IIT Bombay, yielded satisfactory results.

Bangar instructed that completed roads should feature thermoplastic markings, zebra crossings, cat eyes, and grids to enhance functionality and aesthetics.

The inspection was attended by Assistant Professor Solomon Dibarti from IIT Bombay, Chief Engineer (Roads and Traffic) Girish Nikam, Deputy Chief Engineer (Eastern Suburbs) Sanjay Borse, and Quality Control Institute representatives.
