Central Railway Upgrades Byculla Hospital with New Surgical ICU and Advanced Medical Equipment

Mumbai, 10th June 2026: Central Railway’s Bharatratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial Hospital (Dr. B.A.M. Hospital) in Byculla has added a new 18-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) and several advanced medical facilities aimed at strengthening critical care and surgical services for railway beneficiaries.

The facilities were inaugurated by Jagdish Chandra, Director General, Railway Health Services (DGRHS), during his visit to the hospital on June 7.

Among the key additions are an 18-bed state-of-the-art Surgical Intensive Care Unit, a Dragger anaesthesia machine worth ₹54 lakh, an ultrasound machine costing ₹54 lakh, and a high-end orthopaedic operating table valued at ₹1.3 crore. Hospital officials said the new SICU is expected to enhance the institution’s capacity to manage critically ill surgical patients through advanced monitoring and intensive care support systems.

During the visit, Chandra reviewed various departments and healthcare facilities at the hospital, including the radiology and CT scan centre, physiotherapy unit, casualty department, intensive care units and dialysis centre. He also assessed ongoing healthcare initiatives and clinical services being provided at the tertiary-care facility.

An e-magazine highlighting the hospital’s facilities, services and achievements was also unveiled during the programme.

General Manager of Central Railway Rajeev Shrivastava, Principal Chief Medical Director Mamta Sharma, Medical Director of Dr. B.A.M. Hospital Kanakaraya, Mumbai Divisional Railway Manager Hiresh Mina, senior railway officials and members of the medical fraternity were present on the occasion.

During the event, Chandra announced a cash award of ₹50,000 for Dr. B.A.M. Hospital in recognition of its performance and healthcare services. He also acknowledged the contribution of the hospital’s doctors, nursing staff and other healthcare personnel.

Addressing the gathering, Shrivastava stressed the need to further strengthen patient feedback systems and improve responsiveness to patient concerns to enhance service delivery and patient satisfaction.
