MNS Intensifies Marathi Language Campaign in Thane, Targets Banks and Establishments

Thane, 3rd April 2025: Following Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray’s directive during the Gudi Padwa rally, MNS workers have launched a series of protests across Thane to ensure the mandatory use of Marathi in banks and other establishments. The party has warned officials to comply with government orders mandating Marathi as the primary language for daily operations or face consequences.

On Thursday, MNS activists staged protests at various locations in the city, including a demonstration at a post office led by Thane city legal and public interest department head Swapnil Mahindrakar. During the protest, activists reminded officials of the state government’s directive and presented them with an image bearing the message, “Do not become strangers in your state; use Marathi.” They issued a 15-day ultimatum for implementing Marathi in official transactions, failing which they threatened intensified protests.

The campaign stems from a government resolution requiring all state-run, semi-government, and other government-operated establishments to prioritize Marathi in their operations. MNS workers have been inspecting banks and establishments to ensure compliance. Protests have been held at locations where officials or employees failed to communicate in Marathi.

The party has also extended its campaign to central government-operated establishments in Thane. Activists warned that any negligence in adopting Marathi would lead to strict action against the management of these institutions.

This renewed push for Marathi follows Raj Thackeray’s fiery speech at the Gudi Padwa rally, where he emphasized the importance of preserving Marathi identity and warned against disrespect toward the language. The MNS’s aggressive stance on this issue is seen as part of its broader strategy to consolidate support among Marathi-speaking voters ahead of upcoming elections.
