Mumbai: 40 People, Including Actress, Cheated Of Lakhs Of Rupees Through Message On Mobile Phone

Mumbai, 6th March 2023: 40 people, including an actress from Mumbai, were cheated in a fraud case. The modus operandi of the fraudsters has come to light from the complaint lodged with the police in this regard. A message is sent to mobile phone numbers. A link is sent in this message. By clicking on this link, you are asked to update the PAN card number. After this, there is a call on the mobile, asking for the OTP. It has come to light that several people are being cheated out of it.

According to the complaint filed by the actress in this regard, a message is sent to the people who have been cheated that their bank account has been blocked. This message is – Dear customer, your bank account has been blocked. Please update your PAN CARD. A link is also sent along with it. As soon as you click on this link, the amount in the account concerned is taken out.

It has come to light that actress Shweta Menon, who is known in the serial world, was cheated in this way. Shweta Menon told The Times of India, “After losing money, I understand how to avoid it. Fortunately, the amount I lost was not in the millions. The scammer sent me a message. After I clicked on that link, my banking details went to him. After entering my OTP, PAN card number, net banking ID and password twice, I realized that an amount of Rs 57,600 has been withdrawn from my account.”

“The person called and asked me for my OTP and password. This person told me that he was speaking from the bank. This person asked me to enter the OTP that came on the phone itself. He tried to silence me. But then I suspected something. As soon as I got two messages that my account was depleted, I immediately ended the call,” said Shweta Menon.

A total of 40 people have been cheated in this way, and the figure runs into lakhs of rupees. It is also said that all the cheated complainants are account holders of the same bank.

Meanwhile, after this incident came to light, the cyber police appealed to the citizens. No bank or financial institution has the right to ask for bank details or passwords from account holders. Unfortunately, even educated citizens are losing lakhs of rupees by falling prey to online fraud.
