Mumbai: BMC Fines Four Contractors Rs 3.4 Crores Over Cracks in Newly Constructed Roads
Mumbai, 3rd January 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has imposed a fine on four contractors after discovering cracks in some of the newly constructed cement concrete roads across Mumbai.
In addition to the fines, the BMC issued show-cause notices to 91 engineers tasked with overseeing the project.
As per reports, the BMC fined the contractors a total of Rs 3.4 crores and began an investigation into the issue. A survey of recently repaired roads revealed several cracks. Consequently, the BMC also issued notices to 71 sub-engineers, 15 assistant engineers, and 5 executive engineers involved in the monitoring process, instructing them to submit clarifications within 15 days.
“Further actions will be determined once the clarifications are received from the engineers,” an official stated.
By BMC regulations, the contractors are required to repair the affected roads.
The BMC’s ambitious project aims to replace asphalt roads with concrete ones, with an investment of around Rs 8000 crores.
Managing 2050 km of roads, the BMC has already converted 1224 km to concrete, with ongoing work on 700 km. In January 2023, the BMC initiated a large-scale project to convert all asphalt roads to concrete.
The first phase, involving the conversion of 392 km, was completed in 2023. The second phase is currently underway, with the conversion of an additional 309 km of roads.
