Mumbai: BMC Successfully Completes Survey of Maratha Community and Open Categories

Mumbai, 3rd February 2024: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has accomplished a comprehensive survey to assess the social, educational, and economic conditions of the Maratha community and the open categories within its limits. Additional Commissioner of BMC, Dr Sudhakar Shinde, announced the successful completion of this survey, conducted in collaboration with the Maharashtra State Backward Classes Commission.

Initiated on January 23, 2024, the survey aimed to scrutinize the backwardness of the Maratha community and open castes. Spanning nine days, the survey concluded on February 1, 2024, achieving a 100 % completion rate. The BMC strategically deployed 30,000 employees who diligently conducted door-to-door surveys across all divisions of Mumbai within the stipulated time frame.

Under the directives of the Commission, the BMC executed the survey to gather valuable insights into the social, educational, and economic conditions of Maratha and open-category citizens in the BMC area. With a total of 30,000 employees diligently working to survey 38,79,046 households, the objectives of the survey were met successfully.

The use of state-of-the-art software for the survey ensured efficiency and accuracy. Nodal officers, assistant nodal officers, and master trainers provided by the State Commission for Backward Classes played a crucial role in training BMC staff for the survey. A specialized software, accommodating 160 to 182 questions, was utilized to collect information on basic, family, economic, social, and health aspects from the Maratha community and open-category families.

Additional Commissioner Sudhakar Shinde emphasized that after determining a family’s reserved category status, no further information was sought.
