Mumbai Customs Seizes Over 8 kg of Gold, Apprehends Six Passengers in Smuggling Crackdown

Mumbai, 9th April 2024: The Mumbai Customs announced on Monday that they had intercepted over 8.10 kg of gold, valued at ₹ 4.81 crores, and apprehended six passengers. This enforcement action, conducted by the Airport Commissionerate within Mumbai Customs Zone-III, revealed that the detained individuals had concealed gold in various ways, including within their clothing, bodies, and even in the rectum.

These seizures occurred across 12 separate incidents between April 6 and April 7, highlighting the persistent efforts of customs officials in combating smuggling activities. Among the concealment methods employed, one passenger was found carrying a gold chain, a rhodium-plated pendant, and a locket on their person, while another attempted to smuggle gold wax within oval-shaped capsules hidden inside their rectum.

This recent operation follows on the heels of a similar enforcement action conducted by Mumbai Customs last week, where they seized over 4.37 kg of gold worth ₹ 2.46 crore and apprehended three passengers. Additionally, during that operation, customs officials recovered 172.96 kg of assorted silver jewellery valued at ₹ 2.59 crore, along with electronics and cosmetic goods worth ₹ 22.90 lahks.

These consecutive seizures underscore the vigilance and effectiveness of Mumbai Customs in intercepting illicit goods and preventing their entry into the country, safeguarding national interests and revenue.
