Mumbai: Five Persons Affected And One Dead In Food Poisoned Case In Chawl Of Andheri MIDC

Jogeshwari, 18th August 2023: Five individuals residing in a chawl near Jijamata Road of Andheri MIDC were affected by food poisoning, and one person has unfortunately died. The incident occurred on the night of August 15, and the victims were rushed to the Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Care Centre in Jogeshwari for immediate medical attention.

Among the five victims, Ram Yadav, who had recently arrived in Mumbai in pursuit of job opportunities, tragically lost his life before reaching the hospital. The four surviving victims were identified as Shravan Yadav (32) and Deepak Yadav (18), who have shown signs of recovery, and Krishna Yadav and Govind Yadav, who are currently in critical condition.

All these five people are residents of Soharba village in the Darbhanga district of Bihar and are currently residing in a chawl at Andheri. According to the information, the group, consisting of five people, had prepared a meal consisting of dal, rice, and chokha at their residence on the evening of August 15. However, after having dinner, none of them woke up the following morning.

When neighbours found out about the situation, they quickly admitted the people to the nearby Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Care Centre in Jogeshwari. Dr. Rajesh Sukhadeve, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, indicated that the victims’ symptoms pointed towards poisoning, with contaminated food and alcoholic beverages suspected as the possible sources. A subsequent police investigation revealed the presence of toxic substances in the form of cold drink cocktails.

However, the exact cause of the poisoning has remained elusive. Speculations have arisen, ranging from the ingestion of raw alcohol to potential exposure to household chemicals such as phenyl, mosquito or cockroach spray, or even rat poison. To ascertain the precise cause of death and illness, the authorities have dispatched samples of stomach contents and blood to the Kalina Forensic Lab for further examination.

A senior medical professional emphasised that only after the forensic lab’s comprehensive report is received will the t

rue cause of the victims’ conditions become known.
