Mumbai Woman Alleges Traffic Cop Threatened Rs 14,000 Fine; Police Clarification Sparks Online Debate

Mumbai, 3rd June 2026: A dispute between a Mumbai woman and the city traffic police has triggered widespread discussion on social media after the woman alleged that a traffic constable threatened her with a hefty fine and suggested an unofficial payment to settle the matter.

The controversy began after the woman shared her experience on social media platform X, claiming that she was stopped by a woman traffic constable who allegedly warned her that she could face penalties of up to ₹14,000 if the issue was not “adjusted.” According to the woman, the officer also warned that her vehicle could be seized.

The woman stated that she refused to make any unofficial payment and instead insisted that the police issue a legal challan if any violation had occurred.

“I’d rather pay my fines than give even 1 paisa bribe,” she wrote in her post, adding that she eventually received a challan of only ₹500.

Questioning the officer’s conduct, the woman tagged Mumbai Police on X and asked why an unofficial settlement was allegedly suggested instead of directly issuing the challan. She further accused the constable of intimidation and raised concerns about corruption in traffic enforcement.

The post quickly gained attention online, prompting Mumbai Police to respond publicly. Initially, the police sought details about the location of the incident. Later, in another reply, the department presented its version of events.

According to Mumbai Police, the woman already had pending e-challans worth ₹3,900 before the incident. Police stated that the woman constable informed her about the outstanding dues and additionally issued a ₹500 challan for not carrying a driving licence.

“Your total pending challan amount is now ₹4,400, which you were asked to pay,” Mumbai Police wrote in its response.

However, the clarification did not end the controversy. The woman maintained that the central issue was not the challan itself, but the alleged threat and intimidation by the constable.

“I’m fined for not carrying my licence, so what consequences will your constable face for faking hefty fines or threatening to seize my vehicle?” she wrote in response to the police clarification.

The exchange has since sparked intense debate online. While many users supported the woman and shared similar experiences involving traffic enforcement, others pointed out that pending challans and traffic violations also needed to be considered before drawing conclusions.

The incident has once again highlighted public concerns regarding transparency, conduct during traffic enforcement, and the growing role of social media in raising complaints against authorities.
