Navi Mumbai: Taloja Jail Boosts Security: 452 CCTV Cameras Installed to Enhance Surveillance

Navi Mumbai, 15th July 2024: On Monday, Amitabh Gupta, Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General of Prisons and Correctional Services, inaugurated the installation of 452 CCTV cameras at Taloja Jail. The initiative, aimed at curbing malpractices and inmate clashes, had been proposed four months earlier to bolster surveillance in the facility.
“Initially, the jail had only 50 cameras, which were insufficient to cover all barracks and high-security areas for round-the-clock monitoring. The new CCTV system, equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, ensures enhanced surveillance capabilities,” explained Taloja Jail Superintendent Pramod Wagh.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Amitabh Gupta and Yogesh Desai, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, South Division Byculla. Alongside the CCTV upgrade, the jail also introduced 15 new video conferencing systems for inmates to communicate with their families. Additionally, a new body scanner machine has been installed to conduct thorough searches of inmates.
“With around 3,500 undertrial inmates currently housed in Taloja Jail, the expanded CCTV network will enhance security and provide clarity in addressing allegations. The AI-enabled CCTV system will alert authorities to any suspicious activities, thereby improving transparency,” Gupta remarked.
Earlier this year, the state prison department installed 2,394 advanced CCTV cameras across six jails—Arthur Road, Yerawada, Byculla, Kalyan, Amravati, and Nagpur—as part of efforts to strengthen security and surveillance measures.
