Over 17,000 E-Challans Issued for Traffic Violations as Mumbai Welcomes 2025

Mumbai, 1st January 2025: On New Year’s Eve, Mumbai’s traffic police issued a total of Rs 89 lakh in fines, targeting revellers who violated road rules as the city ushered in 2025 with grand celebrations. A total of 17,800 e-challans were issued for traffic offences throughout the night.

The traffic police outlined various offences for which fines were imposed. These included 2,893 instances of obstructing traffic, 1,923 cases of riding without a helmet, and 1,731 violations of running red lights. Other common offences included 1,976 cases of refusing to ply public transport vehicles, 842 for speeding, and 432 for driving without seatbelts. In addition, 153 challans were issued for drunk driving, while 109 fines were given for using mobile phones while driving. Other violations included 123 for triple riding and 40 for driving on the wrong side, with two challans issued for dangerous driving. The total fine amount reached Rs 89,19,750.

Ahead of the celebrations, Mumbai police deployed significant personnel, including eight Additional Commissioners, 29 Deputy Commissioners, 53 Assistant Commissioners, 2,184 Inspectors, and over 12,000 constables to ensure safety and order. Multiple checkpoints were set up to catch drunk drivers, and patrolling was intensified in crowded areas.

Similar measures were taken in other major cities like Delhi and Bengaluru, where police made extensive arrangements to ensure road safety and curb drunk driving and other disturbances.
