Thane: Administration Prevents 18 Child Marriages In Three Years

Thane, 31st March 2023: The administrative system has succeeded in preventing 18 child marriages in the last 36 months in various parts of the district. However, the fact that child marriage continues in some parts of the city has come to light. Thane and Kalyan’s taluks have the highest number of child marriage complaints. Many girls had to drop out of education partially due to the pressure of their parents due to the financial situation during the Corona period. Some girls were also married by their parents during the Corona period. Although they wanted to study further, their family did not allow them to do so.

18 child marriages have been prevented from 1st March 2020 to 1st March 2023. During the Corona period, many restrictions were brought by the state government. This year, one child marriage was prevented. The system has succeeded in preventing five child marriages in 2022. Child protection cells, local police, social organizations, protection officers of women and the child development department have succeeded in preventing these marriages.

In the action taken based on the information received, one child marriage was prevented from March 2022 to March 2023. Earlier in 2022, five child marriages were prevented. The administration has succeeded in preventing a maximum of eight child marriages. On the one hand, it is being said that there has been an increase in the number of complaints received from the citizens while public awareness is increasing in society. The rate of child marriages in Sadhan talukas is alarming. Five complaints were registered in Kalyan, followed by two each in Ulhasnagar, and three each in Shahapur and Bhiwandi. The least number of complaints, i.e., one complaint was reported from Murbad taluka.

According to the information received from the Women and Child Development Department, the rate of child marriage in the district is low. The number of child marriages has increased due to various reasons, such as the tendency of girls to get rid of responsibilities by getting married due to the problems created during the Corona period, migration. But at the same time, help desks, social organizations and administration worked together to stop these illegal marriages and keep the lives of girls safe.
